Western Australia Road Trip: Broome
Broome: A beach town in The Kimberley
After a long flight from the Netherlands and a short stop in Perth, we touch down in the tropical town of Broome, the gateway to Western Australia’s legendary Kimberley region. The air instantly feels warmer, more humid — it’s clear we’ve arrived in the tropics.
Broome may be small, but it’s surrounded by spectacular nature. Red desert sands meet turquoise seas, and within 15 minutes in any direction, you’ll find yourself staring at jaw-dropping landscapes.
Our first stop: Roebuck Bay, just east of town, where the red cliffs melt into vivid blue water. A short drive west brings us to Gantheaume Point, where the colors are even more dramatic — fiery rocks, green mangroves, and one of the bluest oceans you’ll ever see. At low tide, you can even spot dinosaur footprints fossilized in the rock!
What to do North of Broome
North of Broome, a dirt road leads to Willie Creek in the Kimberley Region, famous for its pearl farms. Here, oysters are harvested not just for food but for the precious pearls hidden inside — a fascinating glimpse into Broome’s pearling history.
Further north lies James Price Point, an untouched coastal paradise of red rock formations and endless ocean views. Standing there, with no one else around, you realize how peaceful and empty Western Australia can be — one of the last real frontiers.
Cable Beach
Afterward, having visited Willie Creek in the Kimberley Region, we finally arrive back in Broome. Now, the most famous attraction awaits — namely, Cable Beach. Indeed, stretching for 22 kilometers, it’s considered one of Australia’s most iconic beaches, featuring powder-white sand, crystal-clear turquoise water, and camel rides at sunset.
Since we were camping, we set up nearby with our 4×4 rooftop tent from WA Experts. Consequently, it was the perfect setup: palm trees, ocean breezes, and a swimming pool to cool off in the heat.
Finally, as the day ends, locals and travelers gather on the beach for Broome’s world-famous sunset. At that moment, the sky explodes in shades of orange and red — in fact, it’s like watching the horizon catch fire. Ultimately, the experience is truly unforgettable.

Onward to the Kimberleys
After a few incredible days in Broome and the Kimberley Region, it’s time to move on. We stock up on supplies in Derby, the last town before entering the wild outback. From here, the legendary Gibb River Road begins — hundreds of kilometers of red dirt, river crossings, and stunning gorges.
We check our tire pressure, fill up the tanks, and drive toward Windjana Gorge, where towering cliffs rise from the desert floor. The next leg of our Australian adventure has officially begun.
